I got a Minolta MD 50mm 1.7 for about 50 bucks, and at first it was pretty much what I expected, not so sharp at 1.7, felt pretty much like the other cheap end legacy lenses I've tried; fun and sometimes cool characteristics, but often trumped by modern high-ish end lenses, at least in some areas.

Minolta 50mm F/1.4 vs F/1.7 . Hi all, I'm currently using a 50mm f/2.2 lens that came with my Minolta x-370 and have considered getting another lens that could perhaps be better for lower light or indoor photos. I've noticed the f/1.7 lenses are a bit cheaper on Ebay than the f/1.4 lenses, I was curious of the pros and cons to the two and what.

The AF 50mm f/1.7 shows very slight barrel distortion (0.4%) which isn't really relevant in field conditions. The chart above has a real-world size of about 120x80cm. Vignetting The AF 50mm f/1.7 is a full-frame lens so it can take advantage of a sweet spot effect on the Alpha 100.

All the numbers are engraved and even tough I have used the lens quite a bit it shows very little signs of wear. It doesn't get any better than this, the $1000 FE 1.8/55 is not built as well. Size, Weight and Handling Minolta MC 1.7/55 on my Sony Alpha 7

Minolta's MD 50mm F/1.4 Might Be The Ultimate Standard Legacy Lens

Vignetting is surprisingly low. f/5.6: noticeably better than f/4, most of the image is very sharp, only the far corners are unsharp f/11: very good sharpness across the frame. Flare resistance is average and CA pronounced. A rather heavy lens with integrated filters and lens hood. Built quality is excellent

Minolta MD 50mm f1.7 Legacy 50mm. Which one is the best? Part 3

It feel sturdy enough. The focus ring is smooth and the aperture clicks nicely. One interesting thing to note is that while some f1.8 lenses have a f2 stop, this one jumps directly to f2.8. The only compaint I have on this lens is that with time the lettering on my copyโ€ฆ HOLD THE PRESSES.

Now I have two 50mm f/1.7 MD lenses and an older 55mm f/1.7 MC. My understanding is that the 50mm f/1.7 MC and MD Rokkor-X lenses were the same optically but that the MD Rokkor-X had better coating. The last lens, the plain MD, may also be the same optically but it is in a less heavy mount. I find that the 50mm f/1.7 MD is extremely sharp.

Don't have a 55mm f/1.7 -- all mine are 50mm. The 55mm is a bit older and seems to flare a bit more from various reviews , Slightly longer focal length tends to improve bokeh. The newer 50mm MD version uses some plastic, so focus isn't quite as silky. It's also smaller and lighter, taking a 49mm filter instead of 55mm.

It's easy to see why. Cameras like Sony's A7 and Fujifilm's X-Series have never looked better than when fitted with a classic, manual-focus lens. These modern, mirror-less marvels provide a perfect platform for the stylish and technically masterful lenses of yesteryear.

This lens has an odd, blue looking ghost, like half of a 7 blade aperture that shows up opposite of the sun when the sun is at the edge of, or in the image. It's large and will mess up your shot, so pay attention. The ghosting control is not as good as the Sony 50mm F/1.4.
